Getting More

“Advice books” (diet, romance, investments, etc.) often promise access to “secret” knowledge so powerful that simply reading it will pretty much solve your problem. The solution to challenges is usually composed of 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration, but book covers promise to flip this ratio for price of purchase. This promise of course is almost always bullshit. This book here is the rare exception.

I was getting advice from a colleague that I tremendously respect and asked for a book suggestion. He recommended this book, saying “it changed my life”. Having read it myself, I would say that same thing.

This book is full of incredibly powerful negotiating techniques/approaches. Honestly, they’re so effective that it’s slightly disillusioning. The author himself acknowledges the weird moral implications when discussing how he got was able to get a refund on a soda without realizing the refund came directly out of the server’s minmum-wage paycheck.

Despite this zero-sum cover cover imagery, the author takes the position that his negotiation techniques are more about effective communication than having a tactical edge….maybe. Regardless, do not let this book get into the hands of your evil friends, this book is potentially dangerous! But for you, pure hearted reader, I highly recommend it.
